GRA officer charged with discharging weapon

A 35-year-old licensed firearm holder was on Friday charged with discharging his firearm in public following a shooting incident at Sandy Babb Street, Kitty recently.

Enforcement Officer attached to the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA), Reiz Ally appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court and denied that on September 30, 2017, at Sandy Babb Street, he discharged a loaded firearm within 100 yards of the public.

He was released on $100,000 bail and ordered to return to court on October 20, 2017. Meanwhile, Ally’s friend, Anthony Abdool was charged with perverting the course of justice by attempting to discard the shell casing from the crime scene.

According to reports, on the day in question at about 12:30hrs, Ally and his friend, Abdool, were at G-Spot Bar in Kitty when Ally reportedly fired four rounds in the air while a motorcycle police patrol was passing.

However, the men’s attorney, Bernard DaSilva told the court that four men attempted to rob his clients which caused Ally to discharge the weapon. DaSilva further added that Abdool thought that he was assisting the police with their investigation by picking up the spent shells.
