Berbice businessmen attacked, robbed by armed bandits

Two Berbice businessmen are counting their losses after two armed bandits gained entry into their Lot 109 Number 2 Village Corentyne home and escaped with valuables and an undisclosed sum of cash on Wednesday, October 25, 2017.

News Room understands that the incident occurred at about 20:30hrs after the two men had just closed their supermarket and were preparing to retire to their apartment which is located in the upper flat of the supermarket.

According to information reaching the News Room, 26-year-old Zhou Chunmin was hit in the head with a piece of wood; at the time, his uncle, 43-year-old Chang Sang was in the supermarket, securing the day’s sale.

The bandits gained entry to the house by removing several zinc sheets in the upper flat of the building. Chunmin told investigators that he secured the premises by all means necessary.

He added that after being hit in the head, he fell but got up and ran to the lower flat where he was confronted by another armed bandit.

The victim revealed that the gunman threatened to shoot him if he moved and he and his uncle were ordered to hand over the cash and other valuables. The News Room was informed that after collecting the items, the armed men then escaped through a washroom in the upper flat of the building where they had removed several zinc sheets.

This is not the first time that the supermarket has been robbed; no one has been arrested in connection with this incident and investigations are ongoing.
