Three families are now counting their losses after a fire completely destroyed their living quarters located at one of the Barrington Apartment buildings at Houston on the East Bank of Demerara on Monday evening.

News Room was told by the security that the fire began at around 20:10hrs in apartment #7 of the said building. That apartment was occupied by a Brazillian family.

In apartment #6, one resident who identified himself only as Roger, reported that the fire started in the upper flat of apartment #7.

He noted that he was asleep when the fire started and was only able to save his UPS (Uninterruptible power supply) system.

“I went in, tried to make it up the stairs, the smoke was just too thick, really nothing I could do…so what I did was retrieve my phones, call one of my co-workers, call the fire tender,” he said.

The fire tender responded promptly to the scene but could have only ensured the fire did not spread to the two other buildings located in the compound.
