The A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) has refuted claims that it has lost majority votes at the Local Government Elections (LGE) in one of its major support base- Buxton, East Coast Demerara (ECD).

Claims made by Opposition Leader, Bharrat Jagdeo on Tuesday that the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) captured majority votes in the community of Buxton sparked a wide debate on social media about the fate of the party less than two years before General and Regional elections in 2020.

“We have won for the first time, the Buxton/Foulis Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC), the PPP has won that area so now we will control the NDC,” Jagdeo told a press conference on Tuesday.

However, the APNU in a statement on Wednesday evening pointed out that in Constituency 2 – Buxton-Friendship, which incorporates the village of Buxton, the results show that the party won 1,336 in the First Past the Post system while 103 votes went to the Alliance For Change (AFC) and none to the PPP/C.

Meanwhile, under the Proportional Representation system, the APNU claimed 825 votes while 68 went to the AFC and 34 to the PPP/C.

The Buxton/Foulis NDC comprises of Buxton and Friendship which are known to support the People’s National Congress (PNC) led APNU along with Bladenhall, Strathspey, Colidgen, Non Pariel, Vigilance, Enterprise, Elizabeth Hall, Bachelor’s Adventure, Paradise and Foulis.
