A 40-year-old man was on Thursday sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for unlawfully killing his reputed wife Carmelita Jones, whom he had set on fire six years ago at their ‘B’ Field Sophia home.
Melroy Simpson was sentenced by Justice James Bovell-Drakes after pleading guilty to manslaughter in the High Court.
Carmelita Jones, 25, was badly burnt about her body by Simpson when he threw a flammable liquid on her while she was holding a lamp that was alight on September 18, 2012.
It is alleged that the couple had an argument over a pack of milk which Simpson thought that another man had bought for her.
The woman was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where she died on September 26, 2012, due to severe burns on her neck, hands, back, abdomen, and right foot.
