West Coast Demerara football club, Den Amstel, produced a scintillating performance to remember for years to come, one which led to triumph in the Guyana Football Federation’s Stag Super 16 Year-end tournament on Tuesday evening.
Den Amstel lived by the tag ‘never write off the underdogs’ as they savoured the sweet joy of collecting the two million dollars winners purse.
The triumph was achieved through a well-rounded performance, defeating home side Buxton Stars 2-0. In a match they dominated from start to finish, Jamal Harvey was the first to score two minutes after the second half resumed.
They continued to press on the offensive which kept the home side’s fans quiet for some parts until they the spouted advice due to the uneasiness of seeing their side crash to defeat.
The intense pressure being applied by Den Amstel paid dividends with Buxton sinking themselves with an own goal. Jamar Harrigon was the culprit in the 85th minute.
In reaching the final, Den Amstel had ousted initial title favourites Fruta Conquerors 2-1 in the semi-finals and given the stellar performances, captain Kester Jacobs explained the final triumph capped off a remarkable tournament.
Buxton themselves had a stellar run, firstly booting defending champions Guyana Defence Force and then highly favoured Western Tigers. Captain Jason Cromwell said his side could have done much better in the final. They collected one million dollars for finishing second best.
In the third place-play-off, Conquerors won 2-0 against Tigers. Nicholas McArthur scored in the 61st minute, while the second was an own goal off Raphel Edwards in the 75th. The Tucville based unit won $500,000 and football equipment.
