A 25-year-old mother is under police guard at the West Demerara Regional Hospital following allegations that she killed her newborn baby boy by dumping him in a pit latrine at her Goed Fortuin, West Bank Demerara home on Wednesday.

Priya Mootoor, who is the mother of two children (ages 5 and 2) told Police that she went to use the toilet when she started to bleed and the baby “fell out.”

She was said to be eight months pregnant.

But police are questioning her story given the fact that the infant was discovered by a 16-year-old boy at around 14:50hrs when he went to use the toilet.

Police also found a pair of scissors and bloody clothing under a bed in her apartment along with a bloody potty.

What appears to be the afterbirth was seen in a drain, Police said.

At the time of the discovery, the baby was still alive; he was subsequently pronounced dead at the hospital.

News Room understands that a woman who resides in the same apartment building told the Police that during the day at about 10:00hrs, the unemployed mother complained of feeling pain and bleeding.

The neighbour said she advised the young mother to go to the hospital but she refused and instead locked herself inside the apartment with her two children.

The teenager, who found the baby inside the pit latrine, raised an alarm and residents flocked the scene.

The mother and a neigbour removed the infant from the pit latrine and rushed him to the hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
