Driver surrenders after fatal hit and run accident on Brickdam

A 38-year-old driver of Vryheids’ Lust, East Coast Demerara surrendered to the Police in the company of his lawyer after he struck down and killed a 61-year-old pedal cyclist Saturday night at the intersection of Brickdam and Chalmers Place, Georgetown.

The driver showed up at the Alberttown Police Station Sunday with his lawyer, Police Headquarters said in a statement.

Police said that at around 20:00hrs on March 21, motorcar PXX 3934 was proceeding east along the northern carriageway of Brickdam Public Road while the cyclist, Vibert Tyrell was proceeding south along Chalmers Place and on the approach of the intersection, Tyrell reportedly rode from north to south into the path of the vehicle.

As a result of the impact, Tyrell sustained severe injuries and was later pronounced dead at the scene while the driver fled the scene.

A post mortem performed on Tyrell, who resided at Apple Drive, North East La Penitence, Georgetown, revealed that he died from multiple injuries.

The driver remains in Police custody.
