Afternoon rush hour traffic along the East Bank of Demerara have slowed to a crawl as authorities respond to a Wednesday afternoon accident at the Demerara Harbour Bridge (DHB).

General Manager of the Demerara Harbour Bridge, Rawlston Adams is reporting that a barge hit the high span of the bridge and shifted it out of alignment just after 5 pm.

This is according to a Facebook post made by Junior Works Minister, Deodat Indar.

“The bridge will have to be repaired and place back into alignment then vehicular traffic will be allowed,” Indar wrote on his Facebook page.

The News Room understands that this will take hours to repair.

Indar said the Maritime Department has issued instructions for water taxis from Georgetown to Vreed- En – Hoop to continue to operate until the bridge repairs are completed.

The News Room was informed that no traffic is being allowed across the bridge currently.
