A 19-year-old boy is fighting for his life at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital after he was stabbed with a screwdriver by his father on Monday night.

O’Brian Poonai was stabbed to the left side of his chest (under his arm) after he asked his father, who was consuming alcohol with friends, to quiet down since he wanted to sleep.

A police report noted that the incident occurred at around 20:30hrs at the father and son’s #55 Village, Corentyne Berbice house. Police are now hunting the 43-year-old father who is in hiding.

According to the victim’s mother, her son indicated to her that he went home and met his father and his friends consuming alcohol under the house and so he retired to bed but he could not sleep due to the noise his father and his friends were making. As a result, he went downstairs and asked them to quiet down.

This triggered an argument between father and son, during which, his father armed himself with a screwdriver and stabbed the young man.

The victim ran out of the yard and was rescued by his neighbour who rushed him to the Skeldon Public Hospital. Police said the young man took self-discharge and went to his mother’s residence.

But on Tuesday morning, he collapsed in front of her gate; she rushed him to the Port Mourant Public Hospital and was later transferred to New Amsterdam Public Hospital.
