The Rotary Club of Demerara was proud to receive the only five-star District Citation in Guyana

The Rotary Club of Demerara is one of seven Rotary Clubs in Guyana. These Clubs fall under District 7030, which is comprised of 73 Rotary Clubs throughout the Caribbean Region. This year, at the 2021 Virtual District Awards Ceremony, Clubs in Guyana received a number of awards.

The Rotary Club of Demerara was proud to receive the only five-star District Citation in Guyana, and was one of 13 recipients throughout the entire District to be recognised.

Some of the Club’s projects were also featured on the District’s Project Showcase, which included COVID-19 hamper relief and vaccination support to Muritaro and Malali Villages along the Demerara River, planting of fruit trees in Orphanages and Senior Homes, and weekly reading sessions at the Children and Family Centre in Sophia.

Assistant Governor and Demerara Rotarian, Renata Chuck-a-Sang, was also awarded a Certificate of Recognition as well as a Rotary Hero award for her outstanding work.

At the recent 2021-2022 Board Installation, District awards were given to some of the outstanding Rotarians in the Club over the last year. Board Members Lancelot Khan and Indira Mattai were awarded the District 7030 ‘Avenues of Service’ Award.

The Avenues of Service Award recognises the efforts of individual Rotarians in each of Rotary’s five Avenues of Service. Lancelot was recognised for his Community Service as the Service Projects Chair, and Indira was recognised for her Club Service as Club Admin Chair on the 2020-2021 Board.

At the Club Level, Rotarians Cristel Cheong, Dominique de Groot, Elizabeth Gopie, Jenelle Blackman and Friend of Rotary Lisa Thompson were recognised for their ongoing commitment to the Children and Family Centre Reading Corner in Sophia.

Rotarians Lancelot Khan and Indira Mattai were also presented with awards for their service in Club activities and projects.

The Club also achieved another record this year – 34 Paul Harris Fellow Awards were given to Rotarians and Friends of Rotarians. The Paul Harris Fellow recognition acknowledges individuals who contribute significantly, or who have contributions made in their name, to the Rotary Foundation.

The Rotary Foundation has done significant work throughout the world for over 100 years through donor funded grants. This work aligns with Rotary’s Areas of Focus as well as many of the Sustainable Development Goals, such as preventing disease, providing clean water, supporting education, growing local economies, supporting mothers & children, and promoting peace.

The Foundation has been named one of the top-rated Charities by Charity Navigator for over a decade, having demonstrated both strong financial health and commitment to accountability and transparency.

The Rotary Club of Demerara would like to thank all our sponsors and Friends of Rotary who consistently support the work of our Club. Further, the Club would like to extend gratitude to all Rotarians who contributed to making the last year a successful one in the face of unprecedented challenges, and to the District for recognising our efforts.

The Club would also like to congratulate all other awardees in the other Rotary Clubs in Guyana. Every award means that one more person has embodied Rotary’s motto of ‘Service Above Self’ and has put more good into the world. (Rotary Club of Demerara Press Release)
