32 % decrease in road deaths

The Guyana Police Force Traffic Headquarters as of August 10, 2021 recorded a 32 per cent decrease in fatal accidents. Evidence shows there were 48 fatal accidents this year when compared to 71 in 2020 for the same period.

Meanwhile, the number of persons killed as a result of road accidents also saw a 30 per cent decrease. Police Headquarters in a statement revealed that so far for the year there are 52 persons who died as a result of road accidents when compared to 74 in 2020.

Traffic Chief, Senior Superintendent Ramesh Ashram earlier in the year reported a 30 per cent increase in road fatalities.

Statistics for this year show that majority of the deaths were pedestrians and motorcyclists. According to the report, 17 pedestrians and 12 motorcyclists died. Twenty-one deaths were recorded as a result of inattentiveness, while speeding accounted for 18 fatalities.

Last year, the main causes of road fatalities were speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol and being on cellphones while driving.
