The Director of the Materials Management Unit (MMU) of the Ministry of Health Cecil Jacques was arrested on Tuesday in connection with the investigation of theft of drugs from the Ministry’s Diamond East Bank Demerara Drugs Bond.
Reliable sources also confirmed that three other employees of the bond were arrested as well.
Detectives believe that there is a major criminal enterprise spanning several years that is involved in the theft of tons of drugs from the bond and being resold on the black market.
Last month, 23-year-old storage attendant, Terrence Williams who is also attached to the bond at Diamond, was remanded to prison on four firearm-related charges along with attempting to bribe a police officer.
Williams, a father of four, of Farm, EBD, was arrested on March 21 after a nine millimetres (mm) Luger pistol, two rounds of 9MM ammunition, and a .380 pistol along with 27 matching rounds were found in his car which was parked at the bond.
Williams also allegedly attempted to obstruct or pervert the course of justice by offering police officer Leon George $1.7 million to forego an investigation against him.
On March 21, the police had responded to a simple larceny report at the bond when they made the discovery of the illegal guns and ammo along with a duffel bag containing $4.5 million of cash inside Williams’ car.
