The badly decomposed body of Vijaimal Raj, 56, of Foulis, East Coast Demerara, was discovered on Monday in Enmore backlands.

Raj was wanted by police for the brutal murder of his wife, 57-year-old Savitri Raj, which occurred just over a month ago.

Police Headquarters reported that about 13:00hrs, a cattle farmer of Cummings Lodge reported to the Enmore Police Outpost that while grazing his cattle at the Enmore backlands, he discovered the man’s body.

Police said an inspector and a party of policemen then visited the scene and discovered Vijaimal in “an advanced stage of decomposition, clad in a red jersey, blue short pants and black cap and lying under a light blue mosquito netting on some cloth and salt bag.”

Further, “two bottles of insecticide were seen next to the body,” the police said.

On April 11, Savitri, a mother of three, was savagely murdered in her sleep.

Relatives had told the News Room that Savitri was reportedly stabbed multiple times by Vijaimal. The husband had escaped after committing the heinous act and had gone into hiding.

The husband broke a window in the house and escaped after the couple’s son heard her groaning in her sleep and thought that she was sick.

But upon checking on his mother, he discovered her lying in a pool of blood with a stab wound to the neck.

Three weeks before Savitri was killed, Vijaimal had attacked her with a Guinness bottle and injured her head. The woman made a report at the Enmore Police Station and the matter was taken to the court.

The couple was scheduled to appear in court on April 12. They had been married for 32 years.
