The Guyana National Road Safety Council is working to ensure that safe driving is observed and promoted throughout the year and not just in November when the annual Road Safety Month is observed. Road Safety Month which is being observed under the theme: “Safe Driving, Saves Lives” was officially launched on Tuesday.
Chairman of the Road Safety Council, Earl Lambert said the month-long activities to highlight safe practices on the roadway will be held in collaboration with the business community, government and schools.
“We are targeting schools, minibus drivers, hire cars, we are going to be looking at those big trucks and having discussions with them,” Lambert said.
Importantly, the Road Safety Council is looking to have sensitisation activities done throughout the year.
“What we want to do is not just make it a month of activities we would like for it to be done throughout the years because what we notice is for the month, people will observe whatever is taking place and then afterward they go back to their lawless behaviour,” Lambert explained.
The campaign to make the roads safer in Guyana will also see a best-driver competition for minibus operators who are often stigmatised as reckless road users.
An Inter-Faith Service was held on Tuesday at the Police Officers’ Training Centre to commence the start of National Road Safety month.
