Guyana consolidated its position as the top football team at this year’s Inter-Guiana Games (IGG), securing a 2-0 win over Suriname at the National Track and Field Facility, Leonora, West Coast Demerara, on Saturday evening.
After a tussling first half with numerous fouls, some of which required players being stretched-off, goals came in the second.
For the Guyanese ladies, goals came from Sandra Johnson (48th) and Amanda McKenzie (63rd) via a superb free-kick from outside of the penalty area which went out of reach for the diving custodian, Latifah Moedjijo.
The result meant Guyana scored four goals in the two matches with Suriname only responding once.
On day one, the talented Jalade Trim opened the scoring for the home side, netting in the 16th minute, then Akeelah Vancooten then made it 2-0, scoring in the 39th minute.
Six minutes later, Suriname scored through Saveira Gallant.
French Guiana did not participate in football.
