Miner, 21, who choked and robbed barber gets $200,000 bail

A 21-year-old miner of Bartica, Region Seven was on Tuesday charged with committing a robbery with violence when he appeared at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court.

Rayon Speede is accused of choking and robbing Muneshwar Poorandai on December 30, 2022, at One Mile, Potaro Road, Bartica. According to Police, Speede choked Poorandai during the robbery until he lost consciousness and relieved him of over $1 million in items, including a motorcycle, two smartphones and two gold chains.

On Wednesday, Speede appeared before Magistrate Crystal Lambert and pleaded not guilty to the charge. He was placed on $200,000 bail. The matter is slated to be recalled on February 14, 2023.

After Speede was arrested, he took the Police to where he hid the motorcycle and other items he stole.

The recovered motorcycle

On December 30, 2022, Poorandai, a barber of Byderabo Road, Bartica, was at Futu’s Sports Bar when, after the bar closed, Speede approached him for a drop on his motorcycle to One Mile, Bartica.

Police said while in the vicinity of Bartica Secondary School dormitory, Speede placed Poorandai in a “headlock” and wrestled him to the ground.

Speede then dealt the man several cuffs to the head and knocked him unconscious before riding away with the items and motorcycle.

When Poorandai regained consciousness, he stopped a passing vehicle that took him to the Bartica Police Station.
The next day, Police ranks received information that Speede took the phones to a 31-year-old man at the Bartica Arcade to unlock.

Speede was contacted and later arrested after admitting to the robbery. Speede then led Police to where he hid the stolen motorcycle. Police also recovered the victim’s ID card and License.
