Police are investigating the gruesome murder of a 47-year-old woman whose battered body was found floating in a canal at Hope Lowlands Railway Embankment, East Coast Demerara (ECD) on Monday afternoon.
Dead is Nazaleen Mohammed, a housewife of Belfield Squatting Area; she was found floating in the canal, facing upward, with wounds to her head, ear, neck and abdomen, and her intestines protruding, Police Headquarters revealed in a press release.
It is suspected that Mohammed was murdered by a man she had a previous relationship with; he is currently being sought by the police. It is believed that Mohammed was killed sometime between 07:00hrs and 15:00hrs on Monday.
Police reported that Mohammed lived with her daughter and reputed husband, who is presently at sea on a fishing boat.
She was last seen alive leaving her house at around 07:00hrs by her neighbour.
According to the police, at about 08:05 hrs, Mohammed’s 32-year-old son received a call from her (his mother’s) cellphone and he heard a male voice whom he identified as the suspect.
The son told the Police that he also heard his mother’s voice shouting for her phone. Shortly after, the call ended.
At around 15:00 hrs, Mohammed’s neighbour left in search of her and while walking along Hope Lowlands Railway Embankment, the neighbour (a male) saw the body in the canal.
The Police were contacted and the scene was processed and photographed.
Mohammed’s body is at a funeral home awaiting an autopsy.
“Several persons were questioned in the area, and ‘certain information’ was received. Investigations are ongoing,” the Police release concluded.
