Berbice businessman remanded for ramming into crowd, killing resident

Shazad Sattaur, a 36-year-old contractor of Glasgow Housing Scheme, East Bank Berbice, was on Wednesday remanded to prison for causing death by dangerous driving; he was also slapped with other charges when he appeared at the Reliance Magistrate’s Court.

The businessman was charged with causing the death of 51-year-old Somdatt Indal of Canefield Settlement, East Canje Berbice, after driving his vehicle into a crowd of people at Workshop Street, Canefield on January 29, 2023.

That incident injured three others including an 11-year-old boy.

Sattaur was not required to plea to the first charge but was also charged with failure to report an accident, failure to stop after an accident and failure to render assistance to the injured persons.

He pleaded not guilty to those charges and bail was denied. The accused was subsequently remanded to prison and will return to court on February 17, 2023.

An argument between Sattaur and others at a wedding house in the community led to him driving his Tacoma into the crowd of people, instantly killing Indal known as ‘Fats’ and injuring Dion Kistnen, 11; Daniel Sakichand, 21 and Levon Reis, 34.
