Wesley Bazil, also known as ‘Trappy’, made a shocking and desperate attempt on his own life after being declared guilty by the jury on charges of rape of a child under the age of 16 and engaging in sexual activity with a child.
Bazil, a shopkeeper, was on trial at the Georgetown High Court before Justice Navindra Singh and a 12-member jury.
After three hours of deliberation, the jury reached a unanimous decision on Wednesday, finding Bazil guilty of both counts. Bazil was remanded to prison pending sentencing.
The News Room understands that upon hearing the verdict and after being remanded, Bazil attempted to commit suicide as he was about to exit the prisoner’s dock, but the court marshals swiftly intervened but despite their efforts, Bazil lost consciousness and collapsed after he managed to injure his neck.
He was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment under guard.
The State was represented by prosecutors Nafeeza Baig, Tiffani Lyken, and Praneeta Seeraj.
