The Childcare and Protection Agency (CPA) has undertaken a full investigation into the allegations of rape by a 16-year-old girl levelled against Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Nigel Dharamlall.

This was confirmed on Monday by the Minister of Human Services and Social Security Dr. Vindhya Persaud.

Dr. Persaud said that a statement has been taken from the alleged victim and a forensic report has been compiled. The girl is also receiving the necessary counselling and psychological support from professionals.

“… we are following all procedures and adhering to the legislation,” Dr. Persaud emphasised.

These measures are in keeping with the 2010 Sexual Offences Act. And while these and other actions are taken as part of the investigation, the girl will remain in protective care.

On Monday evening, Minister Dharamlall was arrested and released on bail of $1 million.

A brief statement from Police Headquarters confirmed that an investigation into the allegations has been launched. Dharamlall presented himself at the Brickdam Police Station in the company of his attorney, where he was told of the allegation and subsequently released on bail.

The politician has retained the services of renowned attorney Nigel Hughes after the allegations surfaced on social media last week.

Dharamlall proceeded on administrative leave this week in light of the allegations that he raped a 16-year-old schoolgirl in December 2022.
