Olympian Keevin Allicock will miss the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games in El Salvador following an injury he sustained while training on Sunday last.
Allicock, 24, was named in the four-member Guyana team, but the foot injury means he will now have to watch the action from the sidelines.
President of the Guyana Boxing Association Steve Ninvalle expressed disappointment at this latest development, stating that it is a huge blow to the team.
Allicock, Guyana’s representative at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games and a silver medallist at the Youth Commonwealth Games, was slated to compete in the Men’s 57kg class.
“We had high expectations he would have medalled if he went to the Games. This is something that occurred while he was actually training on Father’s Day.
“We’re happy that it is not serious and that he is supposed to be back up and running, excuse the pun, within a week.
“Of course, this is a blow to the team, but we’ve asked them (the other members of the contingent) to look past it and to make sure that they use his absence as a sort of energiser so that if the medals are won it is won for the entire team, including him (Allicock).”
With Allicock out, Guyana will be represented by Desmond Amsterdam (Men’s 80kg), Emmanuel Pompey (Men’s 92kg) and Joel Williamson (Men’s 63.5kg). Terrence Poole and Lennox Daniels are the officials attached to the team.
Over 60 athletes and officials will represent Team Guyana at the XXIV CAC Games from June 23 to July 8.
Guyana will be represented in several disciplines, namely Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Boxing, Fencing, Hockey, Swimming, Table Tennis and Weightlifting.
