A Board of Inquiry (BOI) into the fatal shooting of Guyana Defence Force (GDF) solider Tevon Daymon has completed its report and already actions are being taken to address a series of recommendations that were made to avoid future incidents.

“When any incident of that nature occurs, one of the first things we do is respond but importantly a Board of Inquiry is launched and that report has been submitted and there is a series of recommendations that we are going through,” Chief-of-Staff, Brigadier Omar Khan told members of the media on Friday.

Stating that he will not go into details, Brigadier Khan told reporters that the issues of counselling to ranks and the availability of Psychologists are among the recommendations.

“I believe I saw those recommendations…I can tell you though, they are being acted upon and some already have been acted upon,” Brigadier Khan noted.

According to the army chief, the GDF will work towards the avoidance of any reoccurrence of such an incident.

“The force as a force will need to review what happen and certainly work towards a prevention of any similar incident,” he said.

Private Daymon was shot and killed on the morning of June 12 moments after he reportedly hit his colleague Private Morrison with a gun and ran away.

Brian Morrison, 25, of Crane Housing Scheme, West Coast Demerara

Morrison, using his AK-47 rifle, discharged 27 rounds in Daymon’s direction, fatally wounding him. He was arrested moments later.

The unfortunate incident took place at GDF Base Camp Stephenson on the Linden/Soesdyke Highway.

Reports had revealed that Daymon of Block X Cornelia Ida, West Coast Demerara, and Morrison were involved in an argument while on guard duties.

A statement from Police Headquarters noted that Daymon allegedly removed the magazine from the rifle he was carrying and hit Morrison to his head and ran away.

Morrison who was armed with an AK rifle and 30 matching rounds, discharged 27 rounds from his rifle in Daymon’s direction. He was hit multiple times and immediately collapsed to the ground.

Police said Daymon was taken to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre where he was pronounced dead.

Morrison was subsequently charged with murder and remanded to prison.
