“The Police also recovered the blood-stained clothing; they were taken in possession by the ranks for processing and the Police recovered the suspected murder weapon which was a piece of wood, covered in what appears to be blood,” Special Prosecutor Latchmie Rahamat disclosed during the court hearing on Tuesday.

One week after Singh was brutally murdered, 24-year-old Yogeendra Sukhdeo was on Tuesday charged with the indictable offence and remanded to prison.

He was not required to enter a plea and was remanded to prison until November 28, 2023.

On October 24, Sukhdeo reportedly lured Singh to a family property at Middle Road, La Penitence, under the pretext that he had gold to sell.

Once there, he told detectives that, acting alone, he bludgeoned Singh to the head with a piece of wood and attempted to strangle him. He then wrapped Singh’s body in a sheet and locked the house before leaving with $7.7 million which Singh had on him to pay for the gold.

Hours later Singh’s battered body was found, Police arrested Sukhdeo.

In presenting the court with facts of the case, Rahamat said on the day in question, Singh was last seen alive in the company of Sukhdeo at about 13:30 hrs.

Hours after, several calls were made to Singh’s cell phone but they went unanswered. According to Rahamat, a missing person’s report was filed and a Police investigation was immediately launched.

According to Rahamat, Sukhdeo was interviewed by investigators and he took them to Lot 187 Middle Road, La Penitence house where Singh’s body was found in a pool of blood, wrapped in a sheet.

An autopsy revealed that Singh died as a result of multiple injuries including blunt trauma to his head, face and neck as well as multiple fractures.

In addition, Singh sustained broncho aspiration of blood which basically means the inhalation of gastric contents.

According to Rahamat, while in custody, Sukhdeo was told of the allegation, cautioned and he provided investigators with a detailed confession which was video recorded.

The ex-policeman is represented by attorney Gordon Gilhuys. In his virtual address, Gilhuys informed the court that the Police are in possession of Sukhdeo’s car.

As such, he asked the court that provisions be made so that Sukhdeo’s car could be returned to his mother. This was noted by the magistrate.

Gilhuys further told the court that when he visited Sukhdeo on October 25, he claimed he was beaten.

According to Gilhuys, an officer on duty was informed of this and a request was reportedly made for Sukhdeo to seek medical attention, but the lawyer said this was not done.

During the course of the investigation, Sukhdeo implicated three of his employees in the murder. They were arrested for questioning and denied any involvement. The trio was later released from custody after investigators were able to confirm their alibis.

Singh and Sukhdeo were business associates who conducted transactions in the past. Singh’s family owns and operates D. Singh Trading at Campbellville; the young man got involved in the gold business some time ago.

The young businessman will be cremated on Wednesday.
