There are confirmed reports of at least 17 fires in the first 10 days of 2024 and while many of the fires brought destruction to buildings and vehicles, two persons lost their lives.

The latest conflagration at about 04:28 Wednesday morning ravaged a supermarket at Track ‘K’ Hyde Park, Timehri, East Bank Demerara.

The two-storey wooden and concrete building is owned by Rabindra Kalnarine and his dwelling house at the same address, which he occupied with his family of two, was also affected by the fire.

Radiated heat from the building of origin caused a quantity of polyvinyl chloride ceiling, a wooden panel door, three (3) sash windows, and some paint work all on the first floor to be destroyed.

Fire prevention officials are currently investigating what caused the fire.

Five incidents of fires occurred last Saturday alone, with another five reported since the start of the week on Monday.
