Cyclist, 34, dies in accident at Den Amstel

A 34-year-old pedal cyclist died on Monday night after he was allegedly struck down by a truck on the Den Amstel Public Road, West Coast Demerara (WCD).

The dead man was identified as Joel Castang of Lot 55 Hibiscus Scheme Blankengburg, WCD.

Police Headquarters in a statement said the accident which occurred at about 20:19 hrs is being investigated.

According to the Police report, motor lorry, GTT 4953 was heading west on the southern side of the public road, when Castang rode across the road.

This caused the driver of the lorry, a 24-year-old resident from Meten-Meer-Zorg, WCD, to swerve.

And during the process, Police said the front of the lorry collided with Castang.

Castang fell under the lorry and was dragged some distance.

His body was picked up and taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The lorry driver was arrested and is assisting with the investigation.

He was subjected to a breathalyzer test but no trace of alcohol was found.

    All those accidents on the roads where someone is killed—
    the dead person ‘SWERVED’ in front of the vehicle.
    The police don’t do any blood alcohol test on the deceased at the time of death… why ?
