A house at Andyville Housing Scheme, Linden was destroyed by fire of unknown origin on Saturday and the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) said a firefighter who responded to the scene was assaulted by residents.

According to a statement, the fire service received the alert about the fire at 11:49 hrs.

Firefighters arrived at around 12:37 hrs.

The flat wooden and concrete building, owned and occupied by 50-year-old Colin Bruce and 40-year-old Sonita Peters, was destroyed along with its contents, rendering both individuals homeless.

Fire Prevention officials are actively investigating the cause of the fire, the statement said. However, the fire service added that a firefighting personnel faced assault from residents while on the scene.

“Such actions are strongly condemned, and the matter has been reported to the police. It is essential to understand that the Guyana Fire Service is committed to safeguarding lives and properties from fire devastation,” the statement added.

The Fire Service said blame for negligence or fire consequences should not be placed on the ranks, who are dedicated to their mission.
