The new Bamia Primary School in Region 10 (Upper Demerara- Berbice) should be completed by April 1, Minister of Local Government and Regional Development Sonia Parag said on Thursday.

The school, pegged at $346 million, should have been completed in July 2023. It was given a second project deadline, November 16. It has, however, been delayed with the contractors reportedly finding challenges in accessing building materials.

When questioned about the ministry’s $4.9 billion spending on education delivery in Region 10, Parag said the facility is about 65% complete and should be finished by April 1.

Some $127 million has been allocated this year for the completion of the school. Asked if the school will be furnished and ready for use once construction is completed, Parag responded: “What has been allocated under this line item is sums to complete construction.”

The total $7.1 billion budget for Region 10 was approved without changes just before midnight. The allocations for each region were also approved without changes.
