Commissioner of the Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) Neaz Subhan on Wednesday announced the ERC’s upcoming ‘Harmony Campaign 2.0’ scheduled ahead of the 2025 regional and general elections.
Subhan, who spoke at press conference stressed that the campaign’s launch is not solely tied to the forthcoming elections but is crucial to fostering unity among Guyanese.
“Not because an election is coming we are doing a Harmony Campaign, I want to make that very clear. The Harmony Campaign is intended to be something that is there every day to remind us of why we need to work and live in harmony,” Subhan stated as he revealed plans and activities for the current Commission’s term.
The Harmony Campaign aims to promote the importance of working and living in harmony through various initiatives. These include the “I DARE YOU” campaign, designed to inspire positive influence among citizens.
Additionally, the ERC plans to collaborate with private schools and the Ministry of Education to establish Harmony Clubs within the education system.
The ERC also intends to organise a Harmony League football tournament across the country’s 10 administrative regions, starting with football and expanding to include T20 cricket and tennis competitions.
Subhan also revealed that a short film competition with harmony-themed submissions, not exceeding 20 minutes, will be launched.
“The ERC is working with relevant stakeholders and we have already engaged one of our diplomatic partners for the establishment of symbolic structures and safe spaces across the country,” Subhan said.
Subhan further highlighted plans for an ‘Avenue of Heroes’ including suggested names from the public, as well as the creation of a national text emphasising Guyana’s history and the importance of education.
“We believe that if that is in the school system as a targeted subject it will be able to remove ambiguities, it will enlighten people, education brings understanding and understanding can lead to tolerance and of course tolerance can lead to unity.”
In addition to these efforts, the ERC plans to host a massive unity concert and cultural exposition, showcasing Guyanese talent and diverse cultural aspects, including music, fashion, and traditions.
