Head of Guyana’s Major Crimes Unit of the Guyana Police Force, Superintendent Mitchell Caesar was reportedly detained and questioned by law enforcement agents recently at the John F Kennedy International Airport in New York.
Earlier on Thursday, Director of the Guyana Police Force’s Corporate Communications Department, Mark Ramotar said he could not confirm the report.
“What I can confirm is that Mr Caesar is currently on vacation leave in the US,” Ramotar said.
Hours later, Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo confirmed the media reports but said he did not make any personal inquiries.
“The report from what we gather, the report was made to the superior of that policeman.
“That will engage the leadership of the police force, that’s where the matter will be dealt with,” Jagdeo said.
After questioning, Ceasar was released into the country.
Asked whether the government was worried, Jagdeo insisted that the police force would have to further probe the report.
“The US will not tell us why they question people,” Jagdeo said.
Caesar reportedly traveled to India for training and had just returned to New York on his way to Guyana.
