The Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) will be under new management soon as part of the government’s continued plans to make the sugar sector viable, President Dr. Irfaan Ali said on Tuesday.

“We’ve been working aggressively at modernising GuySuCo and part of what we are doing is to bring in GuySuCo a new structure.

“The current [Chief Executive Officer, Sasenarine Singh] will move into a new capacity and we have a whole team that is coming with external help,” President Ali told reporters at the sidelines of the Local Content Summit at the Pegasus Suites and Corporate Centre in Kingston.

India, Cuba, Guatemala and Brazil are among the countries providing external support to Guyana as it seeks to revitalise the sugar sector, the President further explained. Some technical experts from these countries are already in Guyana.

With local and foreign support, all facets of GuySuCo’s operations will be assessed and worked on. That includes factory operations, planting, human resources and the corporation’s modernisation.

“We’re now in the process of bringing all of this together because sugar must be made viable, and we are making the investment to make sugar viable and it will be viable,” President Ali said.

Meanwhile, the News Room understands that the current GuySuCo CEO is likely to proceed on a diplomatic posting in Europe. Asked about a new CEO, President Ali said one will be appointed “very shortly.”
