Woman injured in Essequibo River boat accident

A 65-year-old woman was injured and several others managed to escape unhurt after the boat in which they were travelling in was involved in an accident along the Essequibo River on Tuesday.

The News Room understands that the incident occurred around 11:30 hrs while the boat was heading to Parika from Supenaam.

During an interview with the News Room, a passenger, who wished not to be named, said that from all indications, the boat which was being operated by a teenager struck an object in the river.

As a result of the impact, the boat almost toppled.

“The boat was going around a turn when it almost turn over,” the man said.

At the time, the boat was fully occupied. There was one child on board.

An alarm was raised and the elderly woman, who sustained an injury to her hand, was taken for medical attention.

The other occupants were rescued and placed in another boat.

The incident has left the passengers traumatized.

“I am still trembling right now,” the man told the News Room.
