A two-storey wooden and concrete house in Cumberland, Berbice that was occupied by Jamaludeen Mohamed has been destroyed by an early Monday morning fire.
Mohamed, 48, occupied the house for the past four years. His cousin, who resides overseas, owns the property.
The News Room understands that Mohamed was not home when the fire started. He was informed of the disaster at about 02:30 hrs.
Firefighters responded to the blaze sometime after it started but there was little they could do to save the building or its contents. Two agricultural machines, worth millions of dollars, were also torched.
Authorities are currently investigating the incident.
The News Room understands that initial reports suggest that the fire may have been the result of arson. Mohamed reportedly received a threat from a known individual that the house would be torched.
As investigations continue, Mohamed is staying at his sister’s home in Cumberland.
