6-Y-O girl dies after explosion at Regent Street gas station

A six-year-old girl died on Sunday night after a powerful explosion involving cooking gas cylinders tore through the Mobil gas station at the corner of Regent and King Streets, Georgetown.

The victim has been identified as Soraya Bourne.

Police sources told the News Room that the child was among five people inside a motor car parked in the gas station compound. Based on preliminary investigations, it is believed that several cooking gas bottles exploded nearby, at around 19:02 hrs.

All five occupants sustained injuries and were rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC). Soraya was pronounced dead there.

The others remain hospitalised and are receiving medical treatment.

Reports revealed that the explosion originated from several gas bottles stored in a cage outside the gas station. The blast damaged nearby buildings and two vehicles within the compound.

Investigations are ongoing.
