$250,000 bail granted for alleged gang rapists

Three young men were today placed on $250, 000 bail each when they appeared at the New Amsterdam Magistrates Court to answer to a rape charge which they allegedly committed against a New Amsterdam female at Albion, Corentyne on October 23,2016.

Wilton Leps of Albion, Corentyne along with Sherwin Scott and Rayon Scott; both of Rose Hall Town, Corentyne pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to them by Magistrate, Alex Moore.

According to information received on the day in question the 20-year-old female was at a Berbice night club with three male friends consuming alcohol, after which she decided that she was ready to leave. At this time, she was intoxicated.

It was noted that the accused offered to drop her home in New Amsterdam but instead took her to a house on the Corentyne where they raped her.

The three suspects were later arrested and charged.

They were placed on $250,000 bail each and are expected to make their next court appearance on December 19, 2016, at the Albion Magistrates Court.

During a recent engagement, Director of Public Prosecutions, Shalimar Ali-Hack highlighted that there are several cases of date rape that occur daily. In this regard, she outlined that youths need to be sensitized on the issue and called on young girls especially to be more alert when going out. She also warned against taking drinks from persons.
