Miner who allegedly sexually assaults victims charged with armed robberies

A 35-year-old Mocha, East Bank Demerara resident appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, January 16, 2018, charged with three counts of armed robberies, which were committed in the North Ruimveldt, Georgetown area.

Nigel Wellington, who claimed to be a miner, is also expected to face sexual assault charges after he allegedly forced his female robbery victims to perform oral sex on him.

Particulars of the first charge alleged that on December 20, 2017, at Well Road, North Ruimveldt, in the company of others and armed with a gun, he robbed a woman of two television sets and other items totalling $570,000.

It is further alleged that on the same date and location, Wellington robbed the woman’s boyfriend of a laptop and two iPhones valuing $250,000.

Wellington is also accused of a 22-year-old woman of gold rings along with a TV on January 4, 2018, at North Ruimveldt.

Police Prosecutor, Saline Evans objected to the defendant being released on bail as it was pointed out that a gun was used in the commission of the crimes. As such, he was remanded to prison until January 26, 2018, when the matter will be called before Magistrate Leron Daly.
