Suraj Veersammy known as ‘Radesh’, a labourer of Hampshire Village was found by the Police Sunday morning under the Canje Bridge, in Sheet Anchor, East Canje.

His reputed wife is said to be a 24-year-old Venezuelan national whose battered body was found stuffed inside a blue barrel that was found in a trench at R and S Street, Belvedere, East Berbice Corentyne on April 11. There was also a sheet wrapped around her neck.

Mrs Veersammy told the News Room Sunday that her son has always been “troubled”; he spent time in jail for stealing from her and threatening to hurt her.

“Me glad them Police catch [him], it nah mek since he alive. He bad, them should lock he away and throw away the keys,” Mrs Veersammy said.

According to her, since, the young Veersammy who is a habitual smoker of illegal substances, has been in and out of prison, however shortly after his release in November 2019, he introduced the young Venezuelan woman to his family.

Mrs Veersammy only knew her as “Vanessa”; she said the couple has been renting the house in Hampshire village for the past five months.

Prior to moving in with ‘Radesh’, the young man lived with her grandmother, Mrs Veersammy said.

“Me nah care for he but she is just like [my] daughter. She is a very good person, quiet and nice. She don’t talk if you don’t talk to her but he bring her and if it wasn’t for her, I wouldn’t have talk to him or tolerate him by me.

“The girl seem to had a very hard life and I feel for her so whatever little I could help with [I] tried. If she come and sit here she don’t talk…

“When she talk her story about how she grow up, it hurt me, so I does try to make her comfortable and give them whatever [I] can just for her sake. Everyone like she. She never ask you for things…she has good manners.”

According to Mrs Veersammy, she and her son shared a difficult relationship and at one point, she “disowned” him because of his lifestyle but she decided to fix their relationship for “the sake of Vanessa.”

The last time she saw her son was on Monday, April 6 when he asked her for two coconuts and $500 to purchase chicken.
