Update: Woman dies, injured passengers robbed in Rupert Craig Highway accident

One of the women injured in an accident Thursday morning on the Rupert Craig Highway, East Coast Demerara has died.

Dead is 20-year-old Sabita Sookhoo of Lusginan Pasture East Coast Demerara.

Strategic Planning and Communications Manager at the Georgetown Public Hospital- Chelauna Providence confirmed that the woman died shortly after arriving at the Georgetown Public Hospital.

Two other passengers in the route 44 minibus involved in the accident, Anita Ramjit 44, of Lusignan Pasture received multiple injuries about the body and Marlyn Wilson, 44, of Golden Grove received injuries to the head.

Police have arrested two men who robbed the injured passengers of the route 44 minibus which was involved in the accident.

The driver, who has since been arrested, claimed that he stopped to pick up a passenger when a motorcar, a blue Rav4, crashed into him from the side.

The driver of the car, Mohan Mangal of Non Pareil, East Coast Demerara received injuries to the chest and neck.

A minor who reportedly witnessed the robbery was also detained by the police. The accident occurred at about 09:30hrs.

Two women who were inside the minibus received severe injuries.

In a video sent to the News Room, the women were seen lying on the road next to the minibus covered in blood.

A first responder to the scene told the News Room that the minibus had about six passengers. After the accident, the other passengers went away and the two injured women were taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital.

“When the accident happened I stopped to render assistance and while I am helping the woman she was giving me a number to call one of her relatives.

“While calling the relative, a guy run in the minibus and carry away somebody money, so I run behind the guy and then had run back and assist the woman,” the witness said.

Residents in the area managed to detain the bandit who then implicated another young man.

The accident also resulted in the pile-up of traffic on the highway.
