A toddler on Sunday at around 13:30 hrs. drowned in a trench nearby to his home at Little Baiboo, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara (E.C.D).

During an interview with the child’s father, Bissoondial Samaroo, he noted that his family had just returned from church and he left his son, 17 Month old Alexander Samaroo playing with his other children, ages 5 and 3 at the “bottom house”, along with his wife Nafeeza Samaroo, and then proceeded to visit his farm located behind their home.

“Dem bin deh play good good when me leff and later on meh hear meh wife hollering and me run fa see wa happen” the man related.

According to the distraught father his wife told him that she could not locate little Alexander and they both began to search.

Approximately 15 minutes after searching, Bissoondial said he saw his son’s body peaking atop the water.

He stated that he jumped into the trench and took the child’s body out and rushed him to the nearest hospital, however, he was pronounced dead on arrival.

According to Bissoondial, his wife told him the children were playing and after not hearing her son’s voice, she raised the alarm.

He related that there is an opening near the fence which leads to the drain and the child may have entered through the fence.

A Post Mortem was conducted earlier today which indicated that Alexander Samaroo died from drowning.

He is expected to be laid to rest on September 20, 2016.
