Driver charged for causing death of 11-year-old

A 22-year-old driver was on Friday charged with ‘Causing death by dangerous driving’ for causing the death of 11-year-old Simon Kendall. Kendall was a student of Tagore Memorial Secondary.

It was reported that that at about 15:30 hrs, Kendell, of No. 46 village, Corentyne, was walking along the eastern driveway of the road when he was struck by Motor car P VV 7617 which was also proceeding in the same direction. Enquiries disclosed that the driver of the Motor car lost control of the vehicle and struck down the pedestrian.

Following the accident, the driver fled the scene without assisting the victim. However, he was apprehended hours later.

The driver, Darshan Babulall of Number 46 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, appeared before Magistrate Charlyn Artiga at the Number 51 Village Magistrate’s Court where he was remanded to prison until December 28, 2016.

The Court was informed by the Prosecutor that the accused was in August of 2014, charged with Causing the death of another teenager at Alness Village, Corentyne, was convicted in May of this year and sentenced to one year imprisonment  and two years suspension of his Driver’s Licence.

However, he appealed the decision and was released on High Court bail, pending the determination of the matter.
