A 66-year-old man accused of stealing a car valued $2.4M appeared before Magistrate Leron Daly at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court on Friday and pleaded not guilty to two charges.
It is alleged that Desmond Chan on August 16, 2017, at East La Penitence, stole motor van PHH 8016 valued $2.4M, the property of Lance Daly. It is further alleged that on the same day he stole a gold chain valued $160,000 property of Terrence Reid.
His lawyer, Keoma Griffith, in a bail application, told the court that Chan is the owner of the vehicle and sold it to Daly, however, three months after the vehicle was sold, allegations were made that Chan stole the vehicle.
Police Prosecutor, Richard Harris told the court that both victims – Daly and Reid are friends and on the day in question, Daly parked his vehicle along the East La Penitence Public Road and stepped out his vehicle to speak with Reid.
The court heard that Reid left his gold chain in Daly’s vehicle for safe keeping when it is alleged that Chan entered the vehicle and drove away.
Magistrate Daly granted Chan $300,000 bail for the offence of allegedly stealing the car and $80,000 for the other charge. The matter was adjourned to October 27, 2017.
