As Guyanese prepare to usher in the new year, a Reliance, East Canje Berbice family have been plunged into a state of mourning following the death of 39-year-old Joseph Mohabir.

News Room understands that the man’s body was found in his room on Sunday evening, December 31, 2017, after he reportedly committed suicide.

Relatives told News Room that Mohabir was a Field Superintendent at the Rose Hall Sugar Estate and he was recently terminated as government moves to shut down the estate. According to the relatives, Mohabir has not been “himself” since he received his redundancy letter.

As they cried uncontrollably, relatives recalled that Mohabir slept almost the entire day Sunday and later in the afternoon he ventured into the kitchen where he consumed water and returned to his room.

He worked his last day at the Rose Hall Estate on Saturday and relatives overheard him speaking to his pet dog relating: “this is the last day you will hear the motorbike sound because today I will hand it in.”

Investigations are ongoing.
