Some sugar workers to get full severance by month-end

Finance Minister Winston Jordan announced in the National Assembly on Friday, January 19, 2018, that the Government has agreed to make the full payment of severance to “certain” retrenched sugar works by the end of the month.

The Finance Minister said the category of workers who will get their full severance will be those who are entitled to $500,000 or less.

Jordan explained that the categories of workers earning more than $500,000 will receive 50% of their severance by the end of the month while the other half later in the year. He said the decision was made following a meeting between the Government and the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU) on Friday morning.

Minister Jordan told News Room that 46% of the sugar workers will receive their severance.
