Two elderly women are now homeless after their home went up in flames at Durban Street, Georgetown in the wee hours Wednesday morning.

According to a neighbour who prefers to remain anonymous, she heard screaming from the house at approximately 1am.

Upon investigating, the woman said she saw her neighbour Ingrid Barry’s house on fire.

The woman said while it is not confirmed, the fire which started in the upper flat of the two-storey concrete structure is suspected to have been the work of arsonists.

“She said she hear like something pelt in the house and when she get up and look in the bedroom, she see the fire,” the woman told reporters.

The woman was just thankful that Mrs. Barry survived the ordeal.

The lower flat of the building is occupied by a female security guard who was at work at the time of the incident.

When News Room visited the home on Wednesday morning, the Guyana Fire Service had just returned to the scene. An investigation has been launched by the fire service.
