Increase in rape, robberies – Police stats

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) has recorded an increase in rape and robberies for the period January 1 to June 2018 compared to the same period last year.

According to a statement released Friday night, there was a 9% increase in cases of rape.

The statement further noted that there was an 8% increase in robberies where no weapons were used and a 2% increase where firearms were used.

On the other hand, the report said there was a 28% decrease in robberies where a weapon other than a firearm was used and a 5% decrease in robberies with violence.

With 44 murders for the period, police say there was a decrease at a rate of 25%. They also recorded a 3% decrease in burglary and 10% reduction in break and enter and larceny.

The statistics show that 20 of the total murders were disorderly, 12 domestic related, eight in the execution of a robbery and four in unknown circumstances.

Meanwhile, police also recovered 67 illegal weapons. These are 40 pistols, 17 revolvers, 7 shotgun, 1 submachine and 2 rifles.
