Citizens around the capital city Georgetown and other communities across the coast felt a tremor just about 17:30 Tuesday, August 21, 2018.
Many office workers evacuated their buildings; residents took similar action. Utility poles and other tall buildings were seen shaking.
The authorities in Guyana did not immediately issue a statement. Other territories in the Caribbean also reported feeling a tremor.
The University of West Indies’ Seismic Centre reported a magnitude 6.8 earthquake in Venezuela and it also reported a magnitude 7.7 earthquake in Trinidad.
