A Policeman has been arrested after he was caught attempting to smuggle contraband inside the Lusignan Prison, East Coast Demerara in the wee hours of Friday.
Prison Director (ag), Gladwin Samuels told the media that the rank attempted to get a black plastic bag over the fence of the Holding Bay when he was observed by Prison Officers at around 04:18hrs.
The bag, however, got stuck on the fence. Prison Officers found a cell phone, a charger and seven pack of cigarettes inside the bag.
The policeman was slated to begin his shift at the prison from 06:00 this morning.
Over the past few months, the Lusignan Prison has become susceptible to smuggling. A recent raid found a number of prohibited items, including syringes.
Recently, two ranks resigned after they were caught with 398 grams of marijuana along with cigarettes inside the penitentiary.
