Clarence Marques, a 59-year-old farmer, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan on Thursday at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court and was remanded for the rape of a 9-year-old girl.

According to reports, the victim’s mother sent her over to Marques’ home to collect a package in March last year. While there, it is alleged that Marques took the young girl into the chicken coop and fingered her.

On her return home, the child was beaten by her mother for taking too long to run the errand.

Because of the beating, the girl ran away and sought refuge at Marques’ home. Police claimed he gave her a bed to sleep on and raped her.

The child went back home and was questioned by her mother about her whereabouts.

The child told her mother that Marques raped her and the matter was reported to the police.

Marques was not required to plea to the indictable charge.

He was unrepresented and was remanded to prison until April 25, 2019.
