The big names should come to the start line for the ‘Metro Million Mile’ at Kennard’s Memorial Turf Club for the annual Boxing Day horse race meet at Bush Lot Farm, Corentyne.

The official handover of sponsorship was done Wednesday at Metro’s Office and Computer Supplies’ Quamina Street location, where the organiser hinted towards some thrilling racing.

A cheque of $1,875,000 and a massive trophy was presented to Justice Cecil Kennard, President of the Turf Club, by Metro Stationery Supplies on behalf of Company Secretary Ron Ramnarayan, who resides in the United States of America.

This is the 13th year Ramnarayan has supported the meet. The race will go for one mile with the champion claiming a one million dollars first prize and second $500,000.

Ramnarayan’s support comes from a strong family bond with the Kennard’s, and with his father being a former president of the club.

Justice Kennard noted that the race is expected to bring out the country’s top horses such as Don’t Overlook, Lucky Star, Goodwill Boy, TnT, Golden Blue Eco, Just Call Me Boss and several others.

He added that the club has invested seven million dollars into the making the facility more accommodating for families, noting that even if it rains, the races will go on as planned.

Only this week, support for the event came from Continental Group of Companies, through Torginol Paints.

Under Torginol’s tagline ‘Pioneers of the Paint Industry’, the company has agreed to sponsor the champion’s trophy and cash prizes for the entire H and Lower event, which goes for a distance of seven furlongs and has a top purse of $250,000, with second place getting $125,000, third $63,000 and fourth $32,000.

The H and Lower is one of seven races carded for the day

Other events carded for the day are the L Class Open, the J and K Lower, L Class Non-Winners, Two-Year-old Maidens and L Class Non-Earner.

All races will be run under the rules of the Guyana Horse Racing Authority and the deadline for the submission of entries is Monday, December 16.
