Koker door collapses at Leguan, causes flooding

The Civil Defence Commission (CDC) has reported flooding in Endeavour and Amsterdam communities on the Essequibo island of Leguan after a koker door collapsed as a result of high tides.

Representatives from the Ministry of Public Infrastructure (MoPI) and the Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) were deployed to the affected communities to conduct assessments and determine what are the immediate needs. The initial assessment indicated that approximately thirty (30) homes have been inundated with water levels between 6 and 9 inches.

The Civil Defence Commission is mobilised and is on standby to support the response efforts. The situation is being monitored through the 24 hours National Emergency Monitoring System (NEMS).

A team from the MoPI is on the ground, waiting on the water to recede to install a Stop Log Door before the next high tide to prevent further impact.
